Dr. Thomas J. Avallone, MD

Founder & Medical Director

Dr. Thomas Avallone is a board-certified ophthalmologist, decorated Navy veteran, and the founder of Island Eye Specialists. Known for his surgical precision and calm demeanor, he specializes in cataract, glaucoma, anterior segment and refractive surgery—and has successfully performed thousands of procedures, including many complex cases.

After earning his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, he completed his internship and ophthalmology residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego, followed by a glaucoma fellowship at UCLA’s renowned Stein Eye Institute. With extensive clinical training and a reputation for surgical excellence, Dr. Avallone is equipped to manage a wide range of conditions with confidence and care.

During his military career, he led the Department of Ophthalmology & Refractive Surgery at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton and participated in humanitarian missions abroad—including a deployment to Vietnam where his team performed over 200 cataract surgeries. His leadership reflects the core values he brings to every patient encounter: honor, service and excellence.

Today, Dr. Avallone continues to serve the Coronado community with that same sense of purpose. As an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Uniformed Services University and an active member of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Glaucoma Society, he stays at the forefront of the field while never losing sight of what matters most: seeing each patient clearly, and treating them with respect.
